We See Poverty. But Does It Change Us?

Poverty is not hidden from us.

We see it on our phones. We hear story after story of families struggling to survive. We travel through beautiful countries, enjoy their landscapes, their food and their hospitality — yet sometimes, only a short distance away, another family is living on the bare minimum.

A mother wondering how she will feed her children.

A father working but still unable to provide enough.

An elderly person with no reliable income.

A family whose entire life can be changed by something many of us would consider a small amount.

We see it.

We hear about it.

But the question is: what does it do to us?

Does Seeing Poverty Change Something Inside Us?

It is easy to feel sadness for a moment.

But does that feeling stay with us?

Does it change the way we think about what we have?

Does it make us more grateful?

Does it change the way we treat the poor and needy?

And, most importantly, does it move us to do something?

If seeing another person’s hardship awakens compassion in your heart and makes you want to help, then Insha’Allah, there is goodness in that response.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Whoever relieves a believer of a hardship of this world, Allah will relieve him of a hardship on the Day of Resurrection.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Compassion matters. But compassion followed by action can change someone’s life.
